In the morning we went to Vevey to eat cheese pie at this little street market (marche) but the stall wasn't there on this rainy day. Still an interesting morning at the market. |

The castle of Chillon, located in Montreaux on the shore of Lake Geneva, is apparently the most visited landmark in Switzerland. This is probably due to Lord Byron's famous poem "The Prisoner of Chillon" about the 1532 imprisonment of Bonivard who was chained to a pillar for four years, and also because Byron wrote his name on one of the pillars (!) The date of the first medieval enclosure is unknown, but it was enlarged and partly rebuilt from the 11th to the 13th centuries. The castle was FREEZING cold. We had dinner this night at a restaurant that specialized in raclette and fondue. Called Le Museum Restaurant, the building was once a 13th century monastery. The raclette is served with a special heating element under which the cheese is cooked until it's bubbly. It's then eaten over potatoes. |
